When Nina was born we knew within a couple of hours that there was something terribly wrong. Before I really knew what
was going on she was taken away to the NICU. After an hour my mom came back. I will never forget her words. "Corrina is sick,
very sick!"
The doctors came and explained to us that she had ruptured her right lung, air had seeped into the chest cavity causing
it to collapse completely. They had put her on a ventilater, and other multiple medications to help her keep her lung inflated
and help her breathe, but nothing was working. They said that the worst case scenario would be to send her to Children's Hospital
and place her on ECMO. They also said that they did not feel that would happen because it is extremely rare. But within 12
hours of her birth we were at Children's awaiting the doctors approval to go in and see her once the surgery was done.
